Utada Hikaru has voiced her opposition against proposed copyright fees being charged for music schools using her music.
At the beginning of February, JASCAR (The Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers) announced its intentions to start charging music schools such as Yamaha and Kawai. The proposed fee would be 2.5% of the schools’ annual tuition. JASCAR estimates this would raise 1 – 2 billion yen in copyright fees.
The proposed charges have been met with criticism from schools and teachers since their intentions are not to directly profit from the use of copyrighted music in the classroom. Utada Hikaru took a stand against the proposed fees, stating that she wants her music to continue to be free for those seeking music education.
“If you are a teacher or student who wants to use my songs for classes, I want you to use them for free without worrying about copyright fees,” Hikaru said.
The singer’s stance on the issue was met with plenty of support. Her tweet became her most retweeted tweet of all time.
JASCAR’s proposed new fees will be submitted to the Agency for Cultural Affairs in July for approval. The company hopes to begin charging the fees in January 2018.
